Project review
iFit workout UI.
Redesigned iFit’s in-workout metrics to reduce clutter, increase clarity, and better support users mid-run — all without breaking immersion. This is the most sensitive surface in the product: it runs live during workouts and directly affects both perception and retention.
The challenge.
The old metrics UI:
Overwhelmed users with dense data overlays
Lacked hierarchy and clear groupings
Visually clashed with immersive video environments
Was hard to parse quickly during intense workouts
I needed to clean up the experience without removing key data, while keeping the UI subtle enough not to pull users out of flow.
My solutions.
I presented three solutions to the executive team, each requiring more or less development time.
Option one.
Started with layout studies to break down the data types and rework clustering.
Grouped similar data together (like time, speed, incline), clarified spacing, and tested visual contrast across different video environments. This first concept focused on visual balance and reducing unnecessary noise.
Option two.
Took the same principles and added early explorations of right-side anchoring.
The goal was to open up the video area and streamline where the eye travels during a session. I kept the color system restrained and aligned to workout intensity zones for faster cognition.
Option three.
In this final direction, I consolidated data into a right-hand rail — aligning telemetry types by category. This version prioritized speed of comprehension while staying visually neutral against high-motion content.
Results.
Improved user focus and reduced perceived clutter
Streamlined onboarding for new users unfamiliar with metric zones
Final UI rolled out across treadmill, bike, elliptical and rower experiences
The team.
While I led the UX and visual design, this project was a true team effort.
I worked closely with product managers to align on user priorities, and partnered with engineers to ensure smooth implementation across devices. Stakeholder feedback helped refine key decisions and ensure we hit both usability and brand goals.
